    Death of Mrs. Eunice Bates at Nelsonville and Facts of Her History - Numerous Descendants in This Locality.

    The death of Mrs. Eunice Bates, of Nelsonville, Athens county, who was over 92 years of age, brings ot notice an instance of remarkable longevity and a family record of interest to many people.

    During her entire life Mrs. Bates enjoyed a remarkable degree of good health and except during the last few years was always well. She was known and esteemed far and near for her cheerful and kindly disposition. Her industry was something remarkable.

    She was the fifth child of a family of eleven children of Josiah and Mary Ann Coe, who came to Athens county, Ohio, from Stratford, Conn., in the fall of 1805. Eunice Bates was the mother of 11 children. One sister, Harriet Robbins, still living and aged 88 years, is the mother of 11 children. Another sister, Selina Armitage, sill living, aged 86 years, had five children. Another sister, Julia Doer, still living, aged 84 years, had ten children. Another sister, Carline Robbins, still living, aged 82 years, is the mother of 13 children. Another sister, Lovey Britt, deceased, had one child. Another sister, Mary Wearin, deceased, had nine children. One brother, James Coe, deceased, has 11 children. Another brother, Isaac Coe, deceased, was the father of ten children, making in all 70 nephews and nieces of deceased of blood relatives. Another remarkable fact is that in every family for several generations there has been one or more bachelors. Still another notable fact is that every generations for several generations back has been honored by one or more sets of twins, there being ten sets of twins in all, two sets of whom are residents of Columbus. Walter J. Bates, whose carriage shops are located at 1030 North High street, and Wesley C. Bates, attorney, whose office is at 85 North High Street. The other twins here are the eight months old children of Wesley C. And Mary Florence Bates, residing at 234 West Ninth avenue.

    Other relatives of deceased residents of Columbus are Mrs. Clara Brenholts, granddaughter, and her son Roy Brenholts, of 911 Franklin avenue. Another great grandson is O. E. Arnold, deputy sheriff of Franklin county, who is the father of the only great great grandchildren, Herbert and Wendell.

    Mrs. Bates was born near Athens, Athens county, O., March 12, 1808. She was married to Nicholas Bates July 15, 1821 at Athens, O., at which place they lives for a short time, afterwards residing near Nelsonville, Athens county, O., until the death of her husband on January 4, 1878, since which time she has lived in Nelsonville.

    There was born to Nicholas and Eunice Bates 11 children of which but four furvive their mother, two sons, Chas and Eli, and two daughters, Caroline Swackhamer and Selina Wilson. She also leaves surviving 21 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

    She united with the M. E. church of Nelsonville, O., October 5, 1878 of which she was a member until her death, September 6, 1898. She was an amiable and loving companion, a just and affectionate mother and beloved by all her neighbors. The venerable lady will be missed by many relatives and friends, and especially by her patient and devoted daughter, Selina, who has tenderly and watchfully guarded her health and comforts and ministered to her varied wants.
