Letter from Barbara Riffle to Mack and Debbie Price, 18 Nov 1984 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Mack and Debbie, I am waiting for your current address from Aunt Katie, but decided to write while I had facts in mind. I am only child of Alton, son of Luther. You sent me copy of the family tree you had done in 1976. Recently, I started to try to add to what you had found. Being in Atlanta, I thought I could find something on Lafayette in the Civil War records here. After searching in Columbia, S.C., GA state archives, and US archives in Atlanta, I am beginning to wonder where we did come from--nonne would make up a name like Riffle, so there must be someone back there, but where? In the 1850 and 1860 census for Guntown, MS, Itawamba County, I found Samuel Scott who had children that would/could include an Amanda. If she and Lafayette were married prior to 1850, it could fit. I have jumped to conclusion that Amanda went home to have baby and named him after her father. Samuel Scott, age 56 in 1850, was born in Tenn but all his children were born in Alabama. I have checked census index for 1840 and 1830 for states of AL, MS, TN and found no Riffles. Have not yet pulled Ala census for 1840 and earlier for Samuel Scott. There are several listed in index. I have also checked the Register of Confederate Prisoners at Federal Archives and only Riffle were: Riffle, L. Co H 21 MISS INF private orig filed under Rigle, Louis Riffle, G.W. Pvt Co C, 20 VA Cal June 15, 1864 died Ft. Delaware, buried Finn's Point, Salem NJ National Cemetery. There were Riffles in Ky in 1850's and earlier. In the University of SC library, I found book of Ky marriages with Oct 17, 1822 marriage of John Riffle to Elizabeth Ashcraft in Grant County, KY. Could have been Lafayette's parents. I have copied everything I could find in hopes that later all would fit together. Debbie, I know you did most of the work on the Riffles. Where did you look? Any suggestions about where I should spend my time? Did you find some leads I could follow here? With the Fed Archives here, I hopefully have more information at hand. I am afraid I have caught the bug to the point of joining the GA Genealogical Society! I know you move around quite a bit. If ever you pass through Atlanta, please let me know. I don't think I have ever met any of the Riffle relatives and would like to. I have so enjoyed my correspondence with Aunt Katie over the past few years. Barbara Riffle
