Hughes Cemetery, Avalon, Ellis, Texas, United States
Notes:
From Waxahachie, take I35E south (or Highway 77 south) to Italy. Turn left (east) on Highway 34. Take Hwy 34 east to Avalon.
From Avalon: North on FM 55 less than 1 mi. Turn right (west) on Hughes Cemetery Rd. Go through open gate and follow road as it curves north. The cemetery is directly ahead on both sides of the road, which ends at the northern boundary of the cemetery. The fenced main part, to the right (east), is divided into 5 sections.
A second fenced section is also on the right and contains Hispanic burials. Many graves are sunken and unmarked. Undergrowth could be covering additional graves.
A third section on the east side is the Black Section, located north of the Hispanic Section. Black burials continue across the road to the west, a section flooded in the past. Burials are in ill-defined rows on the east side of the road and not in any defined rows on the west side.
Early documents often refer to the Black Section of Hughes Cemetery as St. Mary's or St. Mary Cemetery.
