- [PF] received a letter from C Embrey, her cousin. It is unknown if C Embrey is female or male, though the artistic doodles on the back of the letter tend to indicate female.

Oct 1894 [7] |
| from her uncle, William Sutton |
- Following the deaths of both of her parents, Mary wrote letters to one or more relatives presumably asking for some assistance with her brothers and sisters. It seems that no help was forthcoming. All indications are that Mary provided care for her younger siblings, her brother Clay went out to work and provide money as soon as he was able. Given this history, it is not at all out of character for her to have married SS Riffle, who had recently lost his wife and had quite a few young children that needed care.

- Solemnized at the residence of James M. Sutton of Marshall County. Mr. Sutton was first thought to have been Martha's father, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Perhaps he was an uncle, perhaps he was the pastor in the area.
Justice of Peace Eli Campbell presiding. Co-signer on the marriage bond was a man named William Bondurant. Family Bible gives the marriage date of 12 March (1862, which is probably wrong). Possibly the bond and license were done on the 11th and the ceremony on the 12th. It was wartime, the first child came along only 5 months later.

- this location is likely wrong - most likely it was Italy or Waxahachie or Forreston in Ellis County. Some of Mom's notes made it seem like Boise was the same as Waxahachie - and that just is NOT right.
