Personal Information    |    Media    |    Sources    |    Event Map    |    All    |    PDF

  • Name James Malcolm Price
    • It is possible, though not certain, that he was named "in honor of" his paternal grandfather James Mordecai Price (I446), albeit with a modernized version of the name Mordecai. That modernization led to his lifelong nickname of Mack.
    Nickname Mack
Residence From 1933 to 1935  Canyon, Randall, Texas, United States Find all individuals with events at this location  [2
    • Lived in Canyon while wife Katie was finishing her Master's Degree in teaching. During this time they adopted Mack. Homer was the original Mr.Mom - cooking, cleaning, and taking care of Mackey while Katie went to school.
    • Role: Child
Born 14 Sep 1933  Home of Redeeming Love, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, United States Find all individuals with events at this location  [3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
    • Born at 1:40 P.M. Attending physician Walter W. Wills M. D.

He got impetigo shortly after he was born. He was kept in isolation at the Deaconess Home for several months before he was allowed to go home with Homer and Katie Price. Impetigo is a staph infection, now easily cured by antibiotics. In 1933, there were no antibiotics.

    James Robert Lakey

Adopted 7 Dec 1933  Home of Redeeming Love, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, United States Find all individuals with events at this location  [2, 9, 12, 13
    • Homer and Katie took him from the Home of Redeeming Love to their home in Canyon, Texas in 1933. He was their child from that point. The legal part of the adoption process didn't happen until 1937, however.

      The timeline of the adoption:
09 Oct 1933: Alene makes the child a ward of the court
09 Oct 1933: Court assigns custody to Home of Redeeming Love
07 Dec 1933: Homer and Katie take the child home
17 Dec 1936: The Home of Redeeming Love signs consent for adoption
05 Jan 1937: Homer and Katie execute adoption papers
06 Sep 1937: Adoption declared valid and complete

    Anecdote (fam) 6 Sep 1937  [2
    Lipscomb, Texas, United States
    • The formal adoption decree was sealed for years, released to Mack Price in 2004 following his petition of the relevant courts. This decree indicates that the adoption itself was a rather lengthy process - at least as far as all of the legal proceedings go.

Katie and Homer took Mack to their home on 07 Dec 1933, and named him James Malcolm Price. The Home of Redeeming Love relinquished all rights to the child on 17 Dec 1936. I do not know the reason for the delay, perhaps it was a standard practice waiting period. Homer and Katie executed adoption papers 05 Jan 1937, essentially right after they were permitted to do so by the Home of Redeeming Love.

They later discovered that they needed to petition the court for this adoption, and to have the court appoint an investigator to attest to the suitability of Homer and Katie as parents, so that was done. Thus the adoption and legal name change weren't truly effective until 06 Sep 1937.

The document attached to the referenced source is itself dated 24 Nov 1939, I suppose that is the date that the documents were filed and sealed, but am not sure. Definitely seems like a lengthy process - but just for the law.

Mack was with Katie and Homer as their son from that day in December, 1933. The law just took a while to catch up to reality.

    published Riffle Family Tree
    • Debbie and Mack's daughter Kathy was given a fairly standard "family tree" assignment at school, and it triggered somewhat of an obsession for Debbie. She discovered that her own family was fairly well documented, (her grandfather had prepared a family tree years before) but that her husband Mack's family was not quite so well known.

Debbie began to research Mack's family, in particular his mother's side, the Riffles, both in an effort to break through the brick wall of Samuel Scott Riffle's parentage and to gather as much information on his living descendants as she could.

She and Mack decided to target July 4, 1976, our nation's bicentennial, as a publication date for a book of SS Riffle's descendants. That book was sent out to the Riffle descendants and is still tresured as a resource and touchstone of connectivity more than 30 years later.

Mack Price wrote the preface to this document:
"Samuel Scott Riffle reached his majority as the United States observed its Centennial. Today, as the Nation celebrates its Bicentennial, his line stretches from sea to sea in five living generations. It is to his memory and that of his forbears and progeny that this compilation is sincerely dedicated."

began a search for his birth parents
    • Mack had always been curious about the circumstances of his birth, and his birth parents. His adoption was never a secret, and he had no complaints about his adoptive parents, it was just a natural curiosity about his biological heritage. He contracted with a Private Detective agency specializing in this sort of thing, and over a period of years they searched, and then helped him with the legal paperwork to get the files unsealed.

The search was successful, the files were opened, the adoption home sent their records. All of the resulting information will be attached to this event so it can be easily referenced.
