Content Management - Joomla!
I went looking for a way to have a website that could be home for my genealogy, photos, recipes, random thoughts, pretty much anything I could think of now and in the future. Kind of a blog, but more flexible. That means I needed a Content Management System.
There are quite a few out there, but I decided on Joomla! I was looking for ease of use, flexibility, extensibility, active development community, and enough popularity that I figured I wouldn't be off into "way too obscure" land. Joomla fit the bill.
Joomla can be extended with modules and components made by other people out there in the world, and I've taken advantage of quite a few of those. These are the add-ons that I'm using at this point:
- Phoca Gallery for "modern era" photos. I wanted to keep these pictures separate from my Genealogy photos, but still be able to have slideshows and things, and it's also a way for me to experiment with that app.
- Akeeba Backup so that I can quickly and easily backup my Joomla articles and, actually, the entire installation
- Xmap to create a sitemap that I then tell Google about so the world can know about the wonderful/lame stuff I have!
Others I use / have used, may no longer use:
- Disqus Comment System for Joomla
- Multithumb
- Rapid Contact
- All Videos Reloaded
