The family tree looks so different, and has some of the same features as the rest of the site - why the duplication?
Well, they're actually two different applications tied together, each one able to stand on its own as a complete website, so they've both got some of the same features.
The family tree comes from a different application, and is designed specifically to put genealogy information on the web. As such, it has its own login and user messaging features, there are quite a few family sites out there that just use TNG to handle the entire site.
I wanted a bit more, like the ability to share recipes and other articles and anything else I might dream up in the future, so I wrapped TNG in a frontend application called Joomla that gives me the flexibility to add stuff all over the place.
